First developed in 2001 the Inapari Alpacas stud in Leslie Vale, a beautiful, semi-wooded hanging valley on the slopes of Mount Wellington is only 12 minutes from Hobart via the Southern Outlet expressway. It is easily accessible from the Huon Valley Expressway, the tourist route leading to Tasmania's famous apple-growing district and the Tahune Airwalk. It thus has excellent public exposure for commercial activities (e.g. a shop outlet for farm products or farm-stay accommodation) if required.
Our property is ideally situated at ~980ft above sea level. In this location the animals have the advantage of a slightly colder climate for maximum fleece production. The plentiful rainfall, mountain-fed stream and dam provide rich pasture year round and water a large, productive vegetable garden.
Vegie garden
Inapari consists of 5 acres of fertile river flat and gently undulating land, fed by a permanently flowing creek bringing water from the upper slopes of Mount Wellington. An active tree-planting program both complements the existing garden-like layout and provides shelter for the animals. (click here for more photographs). An additional 2.6 acres immediately adjacent is currently leased for $90 per month, adding to the available grazing land.
There is a very attractive home with up to 5 doiyble sized bedrooms, with country-style kitchen, under-floor heating in three rooms, large lounge-dining room with combustion fan-forced heater, north-facing patio living area at rear, and an easy-maintenance but delightful garden with bulbs, flowering shrubs and copious silver birches. Adjacent is a double carport, large lockable shed and wood shed. Wood is available on the property.
The property has in teh past sustained a herd of up to 30 alpacas with shelter sheds in each paddock, an alley-way system and 13 paddocks with excellent near-new fencing, making for easy and flexible handling of animals. Three large storage barns, and a new double-sliding door shearing or storage shed provide copious storage. The property has been adapted for optimal animal husbandry work which are laid out to blend into the environment. Inapari has been designed as an ideal demonstration property, suitable for Agricultural Science or Veterinary Science groups and school parties, as well as for public open days and demonstrations. 150 people a year visit the property in groups of up to 50 at a time.
R&R&Alpacas
Inapari also from time to time agisted animals with other members of the alpaca community in southern Tasmania. This communal group provide the optimal social unit for the alpaca industry. Our network of alpaca owners jointly undertake shearing and other husbandry tasks associated with the animals, and with the year-round tasks needed to run such herds of animals. These are happy communal occasions.
Although currently operating as an alpaca breeding stud, Inapari would be suitable for any small farm enterprise.
Fleece The commercial side of the alpaca fleece industry increasingly focuses on white animals, but we do not. We are strong believers in breeding quality coloured stud animals.
Fleece Display
Alpacas naturally come in 22 different colours and this unique attribute creates a wonderful opportunity to use naturally coloured fibre in high quality products. Spinners and weavers actively prefer coloured fleeces. We look forward to the day when all alpaca fleece shorn in Tasmania is processed in Tasmania.
